DHATURATNAKARA in 5 volumes (Sanskrit)
By Muni Lavanyavijaya
Edited by Dr. Omnath Bimali
2004 240 x 185 mm 3000 pp (in 5 volumes)
81 7110 232 0 (Set) Hardback Rs. 3500

The grammatical description of verbs plays a pivotal role in the study of Sanskrit. In Sanskrit, the description of verb forms is a prominent feature of any grammatical work. Dhatupatha is the basic & primary component of the description of verb forms. Many Sanskrit grammarians have collated all the verbs in Sanskrit and illustrated their verb forms using different methodologies.

'Dhaturatnakara' follows the methodolgy adopted by Hemacandracarya's Haima Vyakarana. This work has been rendered by the disciple of Acarya Vijayanemisuri, Muni Lavanyavijaya, who went on to become Acarya Vijayalavanya Suri. His editing is so thorough, that it is unlikely that any Dhaturupa or verb form of Sanskrit has been overlooked in this veritable ocean of verb-forms.

'Dhaturatnakara' not only complements Haima Vyakarana; it is a model grammatical work on Sanskrit Dhatus, and a must- have for every student and scholar of Sanskrit grammar.

The title of each volume is given below:

Volume 1 : Tinantaprakriya
Volume 2 : Nigantaprakriya
Volume 3 : Sannantaprakriya tatha Yanantprakriya
Volume 4 : Yanluvantaprakriya tatha Namadhatuprakriya
Volume 5 : Bhavakarmaprakriya

The five volumes are attractively published using a fresh typeface; reasonably priced; more importantly, the proof reading is impeccable!

This is a really unique work!

The great poet Gumani Ram combined his devotion for Lord Rama with his deep knowledge of Ayurveda to produce this very unique book:

The first line of the verse is devotional in nature and expresses adoration for Lord Rama; the second line prescribes an Ayurvedic medicine!

The following is just an example:

raghuratnavaci nama prajñamandye smrtam paropayah
api vilvapaci tailam srutivadhiryye mahopayah

Sloka 47, Jñanabhaisajyamanjari

The English Translation is given as:

"Recitation of the name of Rama is the best instrument for eradicating the dullness of intellect.
So application of oil boiled with the peices of bel fruit is the best remedy for deafness."

hrdayaspadamadakadane bodharjavasilasangraho yogyah
radanacchadakadane guda-sikthakatailasya leporhah

Sloka 52, Jñanabhaisajyamanjari

"One desirous of getting rid of vanity from his heart should adopt the trio of knowledge, humility and good conduct.
One desirous to get rid of the ailment of lips should apply the ointment of oil mixed with treacle and wax on the lips."

Sant Kabir is India's best loved philosopher poet. His works havebeen read, studied, dissected, discussed; interpolated andplagiarised for centuries. A weaver by profession Kabir was entirelya self made and self-taught philosopher and mystic. In today'slanguage, he was an independent thinker. There is huge debate aboutthe religion he was born in, his attitude towards nirguna bhakti, saguna bhakti and towards the brahmanas.

What is beyond debate is Kabir's huge contribution to India'sspiritual, mystic and philosophical tradition. Here are a few bookswhich have accurate Hindi translations of his works.

Review:Verily, the SANSKRIT - WORTERBUCH IN KURRZERER FASSUNG is a milestone in European Indological scholarship and a signal achievement in lexicography. Also known as the Smaller Petrograd Dictionary, this work was completed in the penultimate decade of the nineteenth century. The 7 volumed Larger Petrograd Dictionary was completed by Otto Von Bohtlingk in co operation with RV Roth. This work is meant "to improve where something ought to be improved and to add where something was missing, and to always remind hte reader, by leaving out all the quotations and references, that the larger dictionary had to remain the main source."

This work is such a great improvement both in terms of substance and quantity that it has become the tool for all those who wish to read Sanskrit texts; in fact most of the later Sanskrit dictionaries are heavily indebted to this work directly or indirectly. Monier Williams' is a little more than a translated abridgement.

This is a fresh reprint. Unfortunately, the old typeface has been retained, the value addition being that it has been reprinted on good quality paper and is handsomely bound.

The first part deals with Vedantic terms, and words, like Brahman and Avidya. While presenting the study of these terms, the apt quotations and references have been incorporated. Wherever necessary, a critical an doctrinal explanation has also been added.

The second part deals with the contribution of significant foreign scholars to the studies of Vedanta.

The third part describes the Sankaracaryas and their mathas, and some Indian scholars of the Vedanta tradition."

Life, Thought and Culture in India - Volume II Part 2
Centre for Studies in Civilizations
2000 280 x 220 mm 975 pp
81-87586-04-4 Hardcover Rs. 1200.00

"Rooted in the Vedic heritage, the systems for Vedantaemphasize the importance of, and the way to, spiritual transcendence. They are divided into two groups on the basis of certain metaphysical, epistemological and soteriological issues. While Advaita Vedanta, which is monistic in nature, is on one side, other systems of Vedanta are pluralistic. The present volume deals with Advaita Vedanta and has three sections.

Section I Classical Vedanta
Section II Advaita and Contemporary Indian Philosophy
Section III Advaita in Vernaculars

There are two dimensions in Vedanta:

- The Vyavaharika, or the empirical dimension shows Advaita as a rigorous systematic philosophy.
- The Paramarthika, or the trans-empirical aspect brings out its mystical outlook.

Advaita holds that there is no incompatibility between the empirical and the trans-empirical, because Brahman which is trans-empirical is the ground of the empirical; and there cannot be any contradiction or incompatibility between the ground and the grounded."

"The important message of all Vedantic systems is that the understanding of the nature of the Brahman as the source and support of all beings must culminate not only in a new vision, but also in a new way of life. This volume on Theistic Vedanta is a sequel to the earlier volume on Advaita Vedanta.

There are three sections:

Section II Expressions of the Heritage (highlights the God-man-world relation through a variety of doctrines and arguments as formulated by the illustrious preceptors of Vaisnava and Saiva tradtions.)
