Rs. 450.00

Review: India's best known mythological epic is the Ramayan. In the Vedic tradition, Valmiki's Ramayan is the oldest known poem. The great poet Kalidas wrote Raghuvansh in the same tradition. There have been other books written on the same lines.

In the Jain tradition, too, there have been Puranas written on Lord Ram, the best and most authoritative being the Sanskrit poet Acharya Ravishen's Padmapuran. Lord Ram was referred by the Jain tradition as Padma. Hence in Sanskrit, Jain scholars have produced the Padmapuran, in Prakrit the Paum-chariya by Vimal Suri and the Apabhransh Paumchariyu by Swayambhu.

This book has been produced in three volumes. The Hindi transliteration is very clear and accurate. Effort has been made to ensure that the Hindi translation stays true to the original, and the narrative flows smoothly. A fascinating book. A great story. A fantastic read.

HARIVANSHA GATHA (Hindi)
The essence of Jinasena's "Harivansha Purana"
By Amrita Bharati
2004 220 x 142 mm 289 pp
81 263 1080 4 Hardcover Rs. 170

Acarya Jinasena's elegant Sanskrit kavya, "Harivansha Purana" is one of the finest examples of Jaina contribution to Sanskrit literature. Jinasena lived in the 8th century CE, and wrote his Harivansha Purana in 66 sargas, using different chandas.

This Purana, part of the Universal History of the Jainas, relates the life of the 22nd Tirthankara Neminatha, and the lives of his contemporaries, the Narayanas, Prati-Narayanas, Balbhadras, and the lives of the Mahabharata protagonists, the Kauravas and the Pandavas.

The perfect vitaraga of the Tirthankara is contrasted vividly with the temporal longings of the Cakravarti kings. The passion of Mahabharata is contrasted with the tranquility of the meditating Tirthankara.

A great epic, beautifully composed 1200 years ago, lucidly retold.

Samaraichchakahaa (Prakrit-Sanskrit, Hindi)
BHARATIYA GYANPITH
By Haribhadra Suri, Translated By Dr. Rameshchandra Jain
Price: Rs. 280.00

Review: Acharya Haribhadra Suri wrote this book in Prakrit. This book is comparable with the great Sanskrit poet Baanabhatt's "Kadambari", and Jain epics in verse "Yashastilakachampu" and "Vasudevahandi". This is the story of two protagonists, one good one bad, that stretches for many births of the same, and covers their lives, their struggles, their hopes and their dreams.

The story starts with the Kind of Ujjayini Samaraaditya and his opponent Agnisharma, and traces their eight subsequent re-births. Each birth is covered in one section each, and hence there are nine sections in the book.

This is a very well researched Art Book on the Jain TirthaShravanabelagola and its surrounding areas. The book was originallywritten as a scholarly travelogue. It has 60 pages of breathtakinglybeautiful full-colour photographs and is printed on deluxe artpaper.

The book is extremely low priced, as it has been published for analtruistic motive.

Review:

The idol of Bhagwan Bahubali at Shravanabelagola is deeply revered by Jains and inspires devotion in them second only to Sammed Shikharji in Bihar. It is at once an inspiring work of sculpture and an awesome icon of the asceticism of Jain saints. The sheer grace of the granite idol resplendent against the backdrop of the Chandragiri Hills is breathtaking, a site that would be etched forever in the memory of the onlooker.

The Gommateshwar Bahubali idol is the largest one piece idol in the world. It is made of granite and is 57 feet tall. The site holds special significance for Jains as the last Shruta Kevali Acharya Bhadrabahu spent his last years here along with his disciple Emperor Chandragupta Maurya. It is here that both of them passed away in the traditional Jain manner of Sallekhana (voluntary death).

The Tapa of Bahubali has inspired many odes in Indian literature. Bhagwan Bahubali is unmatched for his valour and his asceticism. One moment he convincingly beat Bharat Chakravarti (the ruler of the world) in single combat, and in the next he gave it all up to become a naked Jain monk. The Digamber idol standing in Kayotsarga position symbolises the mendicant deep in meditation. The highest stage of meditation is said to be "Shukla Dhyana" where the the soul is fully engrossed in itself, free of all temporal bondages. This idol of Bhagwan Bahubali eloquently conveys the non-attachment, the enlightened self-absorption of the soul engrossed in itself, and the beatific bliss of Dhyana achieved by the Yogi.

The book has seven chapters describing Vindhyagiri, Chandragiri and the nearby Tirthakshetras in vivid detail, including the hitherto unphotographed Jina idols of Moodabidri. The text is well researched, interesting and concise; the still camera plays the role of the major narrator. Interesting historical details are thrown in. In the accompanying socio-historical narrative, the contributions of 20th century Jain stalwarts such as Seth Manikyachandra Jain, Seth Sukhanandji and Pt. Nathuramji Premi are not forgotten by the diligent author.

Altogether, a cogent effort by a scholarly writer who, inspired by the visual splendour of Gommateshwar Bahubali, draws a historically accurate picture of Jain history, Jain culture and Jain iconography as found in the Shravanabelagola and other Jain shrines in the Deccan.

Splendid photography lends aesthetic value to this well-produced book.

VADDARADHANA (Hindi)
By Bhrajishnu
Hindi tr. by TG Prabhakar Premi & Jayalalitha
2004 216 x 138 mm 192 pp
81 260 1063 0 Paperback Rs. 100.00

Bhrajishnu was a Digambara Jaina ascetic, who lived in the 9th century in Karnataka. He composed the Vaddaradhana, a collection of nineteen stories connected with devotion.

These stories, fine examples of old Kannada literature, tell us about the lives of Jaina monks and give intuitive insights into their minds. The stories qualify as literature, and are very readable. They also shed light on fundamental Jaina values, and the four Aradhanas of faith, knowledge, conduct and tapa, ascetic practice.

The protagonists are Jaina ascetics, and their interactions with the surrounding world is perceptively depicted. Written in an allegorical fashion, these tales tell us of the wisdom and the serene lives of the Jaina monks.

Light is thrown on many Jaina concepts, such as sallekhana, or voluntary death; and the four kinds of dhyana as described in the Jaina scriptures.

But what adds colour, richness, and depth to these stories are the lay characters, and one finds fascinating descriptions of village defense at times of civil war; the art of thievery; the widely held beliefs of the people in that era; and other varied topics! It is fine example of Kannada literature at its best, and a must-read for the savants of Indian literature as well as Jaina literature.

There are nineteen stories, and in the Kannada original, each story would start with a Prakrit gaha. The original Prakrit gaha is reprinted here, with its meaning given in modern Hindi.

The Hindi translation is competent and insightful. For the lay reader, the translators have also added a glossary of Jaina terms used in the book.
